  2. The parallel rows of corn yield  
  3. projections to the eye that  
  4. converge at the horizon.

  6. What a scene looks like in a  
  7. camera obscura, on the retina,  
  8. or through a camera is a  
  9. function of geometrical optics,  
  10. the propagation and projection  
  11. of light on a surface. All that we  
  12. need to know about geometrical  
  13. optics to understand the  
  14. formation of the image derives  
  15. from two simple principles: (1)  
  16. light travels in straight lines,  
  17. and (2) the angle formed by the  
  18. two rays of light from any two  
  19. points in the scene as they  
  20. enter the eye is proportional to  
  21. the angle between the rays as  
  22. they are projected on the  
  23. retina. Thus, the size of the  
  24. image cast on the retina is  
  25. determined by the visual angle 
  26. --the angle formed by the  
  27. incoming rays. How these  
  28. principles determine the  
  29. precise image formed on the  
  30. retina depends on whether or  
  31. not the object viewed is in the  
  32. frontal plane--that is to say, in  
  33. a plane perpendicular to the  
  34. line of sight--and also on the  
  35. objectΓÇÖs distance.
